Mother George
Mother George was a Black and Native midwife who lived and practiced in the Grays Lake Valley area of Idaho in the late 19th century during the Carriboo Mountain gold rush.
There is a fictional adaptation of her life story which was published by a descendant of a white child she helped deliver but little is known accurately of Mother George’s early or previous to transition life. What is known is that Mother George owned a ranch and practiced frontier medicine in the Grays Lake area. She helped to deliver countless– some say in the thousands– children while she practiced medicine as a midwife for 40 years. Her transgender status was only known by others after her death.
This is the only known image attributed to Mother George.
