Lili Ilse Elvenes
Lili Ilse Elvenes, a.k.a. Lili Elbe, was a Danish trans woman and painter in the early 20th century. She traveled throughout Italy and France with her wife while openly living as a women, avoiding suspicion by posing as her wife’s sister-in-law.
She went to Germany for her gender affirming surgery under the famous sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld. After beginning medical transition in 1930, she stopped painting, and unfortunately soon after passed away from a uterus transplant. Her identity and transition became news in both Danish and German newspapers.
