Frances Thompson
Frances Thompson was a formerly enslaved Black trans woman, and one of five Black women to testify in a committee made for the Memphis Riots of 1866.
Assigned male at birth, she lived openly as a woman after gaining her freedom, making a living doing laundry. After being part of the Memphis Riots, she became an anti-rape activist, before being arrested for ‘cross-dressing’ a few years before her death.
